This explains why there is a teacher shortage that will become greater as more qualified, ethical teachers are fired by their students.

harrison,

When I read this book, I may have more to say. From the blurb at Amazon (H/T Instapundit) it looks intriguing.

“If America is a religion, it is a religion without a god, and it is a global religion.”

If America is a religion without a god, it was not always so, as I am sure Dr. Gelernter would admit, I am sure. Indeed, it was reliance upon the “Creator” for the dispensation of unalienable rights that set America apart from Europe. Since he did not write the advertisement, I will withhold judgment.

Americanism: The Fourth Great Western Religion

PS: You may recall that Dr. Gelernter was crippled by the Unibomber. He attributes his recovery, in large part, to Beethoven’s concertos.

Allen, I heard a panel of experts on Beck's TV show discussing the VT murders. One was a retired district FBI chief, someone you would think understood the founding principles of "rights" and the constitution.

He argued that no American has the right to carry a firearm and that the police would be the protectors of the people!

This plays so well from Dr. Gelernter's book and also plays into Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. In Rand's book the elite brings society down by not taking responsibility (VT and Emmanuel College). Unlike Gelernter, Rand abhors GOD.

I also think the fact that this professor is a white male affects his being fired.

Lady Hawk, the fact that he was expousing things contrary to school "politics" would be my guess. It probably doesn't help that he's a white male, though.

Prof. Winset committed the unpardonable sin within academic circles; he told the truth, a truth that did not dovetail with the "reeducation" of the masses via political correctness; the school's real agenda and purpose for being.
