Doing The Right Thing In Florida

Fla. Sheriff's Illegal Alien Task Force Questioned

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. -- The sheriff's department has developed a remarkably effective - and controversial - way of catching illegal immigrants: Deputies in patrol cars pull up to a construction site in force, and watch and see who runs.

Those who take off are chased down and arrested on charges such as trespassing, for cutting through someone else's property, or loitering, for hiding out in someone's yard, or reckless driving, for speeding off in a car.

U.S. immigration authorities are then given the names of those believed to be in this country illegally.

"It's not wrong for them to run, but it's not wrong for us to chase them either," said Sheriff Frank McKeithen, who created his Illegal Alien Task Force in April to target construction sites in this Florida Panhandle county.

... As the debate over illegal immigration plays out in Washington, McKeithen is among a growing number of state and local officials taking it upon themselves to enforce immigration laws that up to now were regarded as a federal responsibility.

Dear Mr. Tyger,
It was nice to read about a simple solution to theimmigration problem-and it works!! How dare the aclu think these creative Florida sheriffs are being unconstitutional! These running illegals are NOT citizens!!!!Speaking of the Constitution, a "Constitution free zone" in Atlanta? We are living in a state of anarchy!
The gun shops being closed for clerical errors is scary. Thanks for all of the info on your BLOG!.

You're welcome, Lady!

IMO, the Bush administration is not just about illegal immigration and the "so-called" G.W.O.T.; as important as this things are.

It's about doing everything possible, during his term, to set up and establish as many programs as possible to make us weaker. He would state publicly that his purpose is to make us stronger. I believe he equates wealth and power with societal strength and that is not necessarily the case.

I realize G.W. Bush cannot be responsible for everything bad happening in country but he can wield much influence to make things better. You would think he would take action on the obvious things, like an out-of-control BATFE, but he doesn't. That can only mean the BATFE is doing exactly what he wants!
