Culture Wars and Terror

Michael Ledeen points out that no one should be surprised about Iran's call for the destruction of Israel. In fact, he mentions a few recent developments that you may not know about. Read more here.

Phyllis Chesler has some observations on the Culture War that is being waged against Western Civilization and how this undermines the War on Terror.

Australian Police are instructed in diversity training handbooks to be more sensitive to Muslim traditions especially in domestic disputes. Read more in the Australian Herald Sun.

Read about three nights of Muslim rioting in a suburb of Paris. I've said the Euros are sitting on the powder keg of unassimilated, alienated Muslim communities in Europe. The least little spark...

Time Magazine - Scooter Libby spun intricate web

Scooter Libby - "spun an intricate --and criminal web of lies."

From Fall of a Vulcan, Michael Duffy Time on-line.

If special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald is right, Libby spun an intricate--and criminal--web of lies when he spoke to FBI agents and a grand jury last year investigating the disclosure of CIA officer Valerie Plame to reporters in 2003. Although Libby maintained under oath that he first heard about Plame's identity from reporters and passed it on to others as mere gossip, Fitzgerald's indictment offers considerable evidence that it was the other way around--that Libby told two reporters, including TIME's Matthew Cooper, about Plame's work for the CIA, and that he lied to investigators about one of those conversations and confected a third out of whole cloth.

Of My God! The horror! And by the way, not one word of evidence to support a space filling incendiary article intended to simply keep the heat on."

More Children Born out of Wedlock

Citing federal data from the National Center for Health Statistics, Sharon Jayson, USA Today reports that the number of children born out of wedlock hit a record 1.4 million last year (35.7% of all births.) 55% of the out of wedlock births were to women aged 20-24 and 28% were to women aged 25-29. Teenaged girls accounted for 24% of the out of wedlock births .

From 2002 to 2004, the illegitimate birth rate for women 25-29 increased by 14%. It is not known how many of these births were to single or cohabitating mothers. Birth rates for older women appear to be rising.

No information was given for abortion rates.

The Bombings in Delhi, Beheadings in Indonesia

I read a compelling scenario recently (I think it was from the Left Behind series.) In the novel, Islamo terrorists kill hundreds of thousands worldwide with nuclear bombs. The ensuing backlash results in a worldwide ban of all religions. This might be prescient fiction. I can easily see how this can become reality as more and more, I read comments, particulary on BBC Have Your Say blaming all religion for the ills of the world.

Look for more of this to come...

Three Christian school girls are beheaded in Indonesia. Read here.

Tens of Thousands of Iranians stage Anti-Israel Protest

Tens of thousands of Iranians called for the destruction of Israel in mass demonstrations held across Iran on Friday in support of Iranian President Ahmadinejad. Read the AP story here.

Iran doesn't understand the uproar over their longstanding "policy." BBC has more here.

It was reported that the G8 nations had issued public denounciations and called in the various Iranian Ambassadors for reprimand. Since Russia is selling the nuclear technology to Iran, I'm sure that all they said was "pipe down, we don't need this kind of pr right now."

Like Tony Blair said, can you imagine these people with a nuclear bomb?

I know you must have seen this but...

I just had to note it:
From an article by Agence France-Presse:

Iran's hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has openly called for Israel to be "wiped off the map".

"The establishment of the Zionist regime was a move by the world oppressor against the Islamic world," the president told a conference in Tehran on Wednesday entitled 'The World without Zionism'.

The article goes on to explain that the "world oppressor" is of course the "great Satan" aka in the civilized world as the United States.

George Soros from Atlantic Monthly, 1997

This is what George Soros believes and has spent millions if not billions of dollars for.

Our sense of right and wrong is endangered by our preoccupation with success, as measured by money.

Open Society – where rights of individual are safe guarded but shared values hold society together. Open society is middle ground between extremes such as Communism, and nationalism and laissez-faire capitalism. Open society improves the imperfect society by trial and error, insists on freedom of expression and protecting dissent.

Offers “limitless progress.” Open society must regard it's own shared values as a matter of debate and choice. The concept of “open society” must be the only absolute. Declaration of Independence should be revised so that instead of stating that “we hold these truths to be self-evident” it would acknowledge our fallibility. There is no ultimate truth; our beliefs are expressions of choice.

Laissez-faire incompatible with concept of open society and has effectively banished income or wealth redistribution

We have entered a period of disorder which laissez-faire is incapable of addressing.

U.S. and UK laissez-faire policies prevented open society development of Russia as well as reform and reconstitution of the United Nations.

Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.

Summer is over! No more cold storage apples. It's apple season in North America. My favorite: Fugi. Here's some apple reading for you.

What's Wrong with Europe?

Europe has drifted from it's Judaeo-Christian moorings and embraced The 'great' liberal thinkers of the 19th century, atheists and humanists such as Nietzsche (the father of nihilism) who said life has no meaning, therefore man should be courageous. Nietzsche believed man's spirit had been crushed by Judaeo-Christan weakness and that supermen were needed to create a new society based on existential heroes. Admiring Nietzsche, Adolf Hitler became that hero and the devastation of Europe resulted.

The 19th century saw a multitude of new/old liberal 'isms.(human, secular, relative, etc) coincident with the end of the European"Golden Era," and turn of the century anarchists. Europe suffered through the Great War, Communism, the great depression, the rise of Adolph Hitler, Nazis, World War II, and socialism. Socialist society turned secular, socialist and each succeeding generation moved further and away from the moral foundations of the Bible. Into this vacuum crept the old pagan "false religions" of humanism, environmentalism, relativism, pantheism, and hedonism, etc. As a result, their birthrates plummeted and immigration rose dramatically. Unfortunately, not being as egalitarian as America, they have failed to assimilate a large population of immigrants, particularly Muslims. Now these disenfranchised Muslim youth rebelling against the secular society are turning to crime and fundamental Islam. Possibly too late, the Europeans are recoqnizing the problem. Recently the French have prohibited Muslim school girls from wearing a head covering in public schools. Of course, Jewish school boys may no longer wear a yarmulke. This will probably encourage more militant Islamists who will not tolerate a secular society therefore it stands to reason that Europe will undergo a tremendous upheaval in the coming years. Given their history of appeasement, it appears that the European future is one of dhimmitude and submission. This will present real challenges to US/European relations.

Fallout From Lawrence versus Texas

Like Kelo v. New London, another one of the infamous 2005 Supreme Court Decisions. In Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court struck down a Texas Law against homosexual sodomy. It was argued that this was the beginning of a slippery slope. Well, the slide has begun and we haven't begun to see bottom yet. Read about the most immediate and forewarned consequence here.

Same Sex Marriage

"If a word means everything, then it means nothing. Stretching words like "marriage" and "family" to include all sorts of things that they never meant before is reducing these words -- and the institutions they represent -- to nothing." Thomas Sowell

Smarter men have recently warned that Same sex marriage is just a sham for eventually doing away with marriage altogether. We can look to countries like Sweden to see where this nonsense leads. Read here.

Like the Supremes, I too think we can look at other countries for examples (this is where I part company with Breyer and O'Connor) of what not to do. Which paths not to go down.

Comment on Saddam's rights

A military Tribunal should have been used from the beginning. All of this is simply "Pearls to Swine" ... and who is President Bush meeting with today? Mr. Abbas, of course. A Terrorist extraordinare! - Tiger

I don't understand this...

I guess I really do but I don't want to go there now.

As Saddam's Trial Begins...

We should remember the great American who captured Saddam Hussein.

Saddam's human rights have been violated.

An article on breitbart.com reports that Saddam's attorneys are seeking a three month delay.

Look who's name popped up....

An American adviser to Saddam's defense team said Tuesday the former dictator's rights were violated after his capture. Former U.S. attorney general Ramsey Clark said "the fundamental human rights that have been violated" include Saddam's right to a lawyer of his own choosing, access to facilities to prepare his defense, and access to a proper constituted court to challenge the charges.

I am so sorry.

I am sorry that Saddam didn't die fighting like a man in his spider hole. I am sorry that the people of Iraq couldn't just take him out into the street and in front of international television string him up like Benito Mussolini. Justice would have been served.

The Material Girl and Kabbala

Several years ago at a hotel in South Florida, a sign was posted outside a meeting room announcing someone talking about Kabbala. I was interested because there was a steady stream of mostly young and attractive people going into the meeting room. I assumed it was some form of multi-level marketing. I never found out what it was until recently when I read that Madonna is into Kabbala and had taken the Hebrew name Esther. So I'm thinking "now what?" You know if Madonna is into it, it's out there! Imagine my surprise this week when Drudge headlines a story that Madonna said "man is going to hell unless he turns away from the beast." She explained that the "beast is the material world." Somewhere along the way I had learned that Kabbala was a "Jewish off-shoot or cult." To learn more, I googled kabbala and I'm not going to regurge the information but here's a link http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08590a.htm.

My impression is that this is some old form of new age spiritualism or "false religion" which originated in the tenth century and is loosely based on the Torah. They seem to have some sort of Gnostic information. They have two main books: The Book of Creation is supposedly a monologue of the patriarch Abraham which "enumerates the thirty-two ways of wisdom by which God produced the universe, and who shows, by the analogy which is assumed to exist between the visible things and the letters which are the signs of thought, the manner in which all has emanated from God and is inferior to Him."

Their Bible is called the Zohar and teaches them how to communicate with invisible powers and exercise authority over demons, nature, diseases, etc.

I wonder if the Kabbala people have offered to relieve her of her material burdens.

Esther's "talking the talk" but will Madonna be able to "walk the walk?"

Pop Culture - Desperate Housewives

An article over at National Review on-line entitled Feeling Disappointed echoed one sentiment that my household had expressed lately.

Television critics are disappointed with Desperate Housewives. And they should be. The much-loved ladies of Wisteria Lane have become just plain silly or even worse — a big bore Bree snarling at the police detective? Never! Lynette acting dorky in the office? But I thought she was too smart for that! You keep hoping the show is going to get better than it seems and you want to stay patient and stay tuned. Sort of like the Miers nomination.

Is it Time for Conservatives to Consider Bush Impeachment ?

"A President who does not uphold the Constitution is not worth supporting." - Tiger

NRA-ILA Grassroots Alert Vol. 12, No. 41 10/14/05
CONTINUE TO URGE PASSAGE OF S. 397 IN U.S. HOUSE
As you know, the passage of S. 397--the "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act"--by the U.S. Senate represents a great victory and a vitally important first step toward ending the anti-gun lobby's shameless attempts to bankrupt the firearm industry through reckless, predatory lawsuits. It also represents a crucial step forward for law-abiding firearm manufacturers, retailers, and owners in this country. But it is important to emphasize that it is just a first step. We must stay the course.
It is critical that you continue to contact your U.S. Representative and urge him/her to pass S. 397 (as passed by the Senate) in the U.S. House. It's time to put a stop to these meritless, reckless lawsuits once and for all.
You can find contact information for your elected officials by using the "Write Your Representatives" tool at www.NRAILA.org, or you can call your U.S. Representative at (202) 225-3121.
We can and will achieve our mutual goal of finally enacting this common sense law, but only with your continued assistance. Please help us finish the job once and for all by contacting your U.S. Representative in Washington and urging him/her to support the "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act" as passed by the Senate.
FEMA GUN BAN YET ANOTHER SLAP FOR LOUISIANA GUN OWNERS
Under pressure from NRA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is "reconsidering" a ban on the possession of firearms in the trailer parks providing homes for hundreds of families left homeless by hurricane Katrina.
As the experience on the streets of New Orleans showed us, there is a demonstrable need to protect life and family after a disaster. Yet, according to an October 12, Associated Press article, FEMA has had a general policy for several years to prohibit guns at such parks anywhere in the country.
The AP also reported that FEMA spokesman Butch Kinerney said that they were "trying to figure out who wrote the rules and what the intent was." The result, however, is clear--600 families were deprived of the option of keeping a firearm for self-defense.
NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre threatened legal and legislative action against FEMA, which is already facing Congressional scrutiny for its mismanagement of the government response to hurricane Katrina.
"Whether it's a national disaster, a flu pandemic, or an earthquake, the Constitution can't be thrown out the window," said LaPierre.
We still need to hear from members who have been a victim of gun confiscation in Louisiana. If you have personally had a gun confiscated in Louisiana since Hurricane Katrina hit, please call (888) 414-6333. Be prepared to leave only your name and immediate contact information so we can get back to you. Once again, we are seeking contact information from actual victims of gun confiscation in Louisiana only.
If you would like to contribute to our legal and legislative efforts in Louisiana, please go to secure.nraila.org/Contribute.aspx. For additional information, please visit www.NRAILA.org, or e-mail us at ila-contact@nrahq.org.
SAN FRANCISCO POLICE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION OPPOSES PROP H--SAN FRANCISCO GUN BAN
On November 8, San Francisco voters will go to the polls to vote on Proposition H--a citywide gun ban. If Proposition H passes, it will become the most restrictive gun control law in the nation; even more restrictive than the egregious Washington, D.C., gun ban that NRA-ILA is currently working to overturn in Congress! The ordinance would ban residents from possessing any handgun and they would be forced to turn over their handguns within 90 days. The sale, manufacture, and distribution of all firearms would be prohibited!
The San Francisco Police Officers Association (POA) represents the more than 2,200 sworn officers serving on the SFPD. This week, a statement appearing on SF-POA's website (www.sfpoa.org) details, in no uncertain terms, the group's strong opposition to Proposition H.
A quote from the statement reads, "The San Francisco Police Officers Association (POA), representing men and women dedicated to a life of service to public safety, must evaluate any legislative effort affecting its membership. After careful review and analysis, the POA does not support the proposed ballot initiative that would nullify the personal choice of city residents to lawfully possess a handgun for self-defense purposes. When we disarm honest, law-abiding citizens, we contribute to empowering criminals and endangering society-at-large. The San Francisco Police Officers Association supports the right of our members (active and retired), neighbors, and law-abiding citizens in this city to choose reasonable means of self-defense while in their homes or businesses. We oppose Proposition H, the S.F. Gun Ban Initiative."
The only thing standing in the way of Proposition H passing is you! To educate and mobilize Bay Area pro-gun supporters, NRA-ILA unveiled a website dedicated exclusively to exposing the truth about Proposition H. The website-- www.StopSanFranban.com --is designed to provide you with one-stop-shopping for the information and tools you will need to ensure Proposition H is defeated on November 8. Please be sure to visit the site and then forward this link to your family, friends, and fellow firearm owners, both inside and outside of San Francisco, to ensure the collective voices of America's gun owners are heard loudly and clearly in the months leading up to, and especially on, November 8! Those of you who don't live directly in San Francisco, but reside nearby, should visit the site frequently for updates on what you can do locally to ensure this deplorable proposition is defeated.
A LOOK AT THE STATES
(****For all of the action items below, you can find contact information for your legislators by using the "Write Your Representatives" tool at www.NRAILA.org. As always, thank you for your support.****)
MASSACHUSETTSThe Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security has announced a second hearing for S.2113, "An act prohibiting the sale, transfer or possession of 'cop killer' handguns and high-powered rifles." This is the bill that seeks to ban .50 caliber BMG rifles and the FN "Five-seveN" handgun. Please plan to attend the hearing that will take place on October 25, 2005 at 10:00 a.m., in Room 437 of the State House. If you are unable to attend, you can contact the committee at (617) 722-2230.
NEW JERSEYNRA President Sandy Froman is scheduled to be keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs (ANJRPC) this Sunday, October 16, at approximately 11:20 a.m., at the Bridgewater, N.J. Marriott Hotel, 700 Commons Way, Bridgewater, N.J. 08807 (marriott.com/property/abouthotel/default/sosbw?T_Ref=mi_left). NRA members are invited to attend. Events preceding and following Ms. Froman's speech are open to ANJRPC members only (to join, see www.anjrpc.org/Membership.htm). Seating is limited and cannot be guaranteed. ANJRPC is NRA's official state affiliate in New Jersey.
NEW MEXICOThe New Mexico Department of Public Safety has scheduled a public hearing on proposed rules to implement the 2005 legislative changes to the Concealed Handgun Carry Act (HB 641). Public comments will be taken on Tuesday, November 1, beginning at 9:00 a.m., at the DPS Law Enforcement Academy Auditorium, located at 4491 Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe. Visit www.dps.nm.org/faq/concealed_weapon.htm to obtain a copy of the proposed rules, or contact the DPS Special Investigations Unit at (505) 827-9097. Written comments must be submitted to Sharron Henderson, Department of Public Safety, Special Investigations Division, 4491 Cerrillos Road, Santa Fe, NM 87504-1628, no later than 5:00 p.m., on November 1. If you plan on attending the hearing and presenting verbal testimony or comments, it is strongly suggested that you also submit written comments at that time. NRA-ILA and our state affiliate, the New Mexico Shooting Sports Association, are currently reviewing the proposed rules and may be submitting written comments, but individual NRA members and certified instructors are encouraged to participate as individuals in this process as well.
NEW YORKThe Sportsmen's Association for Firearms Education Inc. (S.A.F.E.) will be hosting its "2005 Right-to-Carry Conference & Second Amendment Rally" this Sunday, October 16, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (doors open at 12:00 noon). The event will be held at the Sheraton, Long Island, 110 Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, Smithtown, NY, (631) 231-1100, (on Motor Parkway on North side of LIE between exits 53 & 55). In attendance at the event will be: Wayne R. LaPierre, NRA Executive Vice President; John C. Sigler, NRA First Vice President; Randy A. Daniels, New York Secretary of State; Jim Fotis, Executive Director, Law Enforcement Alliance of America; and John L. Cushman, S.A.F.E. President and Founder, and NRA Director. At the conference, you will get the latest information on the Right-to-Carry on Long Island, meet and network with fellow sportsmen, raise issues of concern with local and national leaders of Second Amendment organizations and local legislators, and win valuable prizes in drawings limited to attendees only. Admission and parking is free and the event is open to your family and friends.
NORTH CAROLINAThe Charlotte City Council has decided to consider imposing restrictions on the currently legal practice of law-abiding citizens carrying legally owned firearms that are holstered and visible. This issue was raised by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Darrel Stephens, who, according to an October 11 report by News 14 Carolina, claims "the open display of firearms is a threat to public safety." How law-abiding citizens simply obeying the law can constitute a "threat to public safety" is lost on us. Especially considering Chief Stephens held a press conference in August where he stated "the city, the county, is safer than it was last year." This press conference was held after a weekend when east Charlotte experienced five homicides. So, which is it? Is the city safer than it was last year, or does Chief Stephens suddenly consider law-abiding citizens obeying the law and exercising a right protected by both the United States and North Carolina Constitutions to represent some sort of "threat to public safety"? At this point, it is unclear how the City Council will handle this issue. During a City Council meeting on Monday night, when Chief Stephens brought the issue up, no action was taken. It is possible the City Council will not address the issue until after the November 8 General Election, thus avoiding any possible threat of angering pro-gun voters. While NRA will continue to monitor this issue, and take appropriate action if necessary, we encourage those who support our Right to Keep and Bear Arms and object to any attacks on this freedom that might adversely impact law-abiding gun owners, to contact members of the Charlotte City Council and voice their concerns. Contact information for Council Members can be found at www.charmeck.org/Departments/City+Council/home, or you can call the Council at (704) 336-2241.
WISCONSINAB 677, a bill that would remove barriers to beginning hunters, is scheduled for a hearing in the Assembly Natural Resources Committee on Wednesday, October 19, at 10:00 a.m., in room 417 North, in the State Capitol building. Please attend the hearing and show your support for this critical legislation. If you're unable to attend the hearing, please contact your State Representative at (800) 362-9472 and ask him/her to support the measure. AB 677 would allow anyone who wants to try hunting to do so before taking a hunter safety course, as long as they are supervised by an experienced licensed hunter. The bill would also repeal the current law that prohibits a youth under 12 from receiving firearms training at a range. AB 677 would also repeal the ban on having an uncased and unloaded firearm in a vehicle that is sitting still. No longer will hunters be ticketed for setting their unloaded gun on the tailgate of their truck while preparing for the day's hunt. Again, please contact your Representative and urge him/her to support AB 677.

Bird Flu could kill 50,000 to 750,000 in Britain

In a BBC interview, The Chief British Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson said that if the Bird Flu mutates so that it can be spread from human to human, 50,000 people could be killed in the UK. He also said that if the flu strikes before a vaccine is developed, another 50,000 would probably die but 750,000 deaths was "not impossible."

The CIA Factbook shows a UK population of 60.44 m.

Bird Flu

I did a quick google of influenza infection rates earlier this week. I may not be remembering the numbers correctly but I remember the infection rate for school children will be about 30%. I think a study showed about a 19% infection rate for the general populace. So a severe outbreak could affect about 57 million Americans. I also read that the mortality rate for H5N1 is presently about 50%....You do the math, I can't bear to.

AP coverage of the Nalchik, Russia attacks

Read much more in-depth coverage here of the Islamofascist push in the Caucacus region of Russia. This area is about 60 miles from Beslan where a heinous terror attack on a school occurred just over a year ago.

As of this posting The BBC which is supposedly the "World's Premier News Organization" had no more to say than my previous post indicated.

I used to admire the BBC, but in the past 5 or 6 years they have been taken over by the left.

A pity.

Biased Beeb

The BBC Headline - Dozens die as Russian city raided

60 dead in Thursday's attacks which the BBC can only describe as "clashes between police and gunmen." To be fair to the Beeb, it was passing along Russian media reports.

But really, they do seem loathe to acknowledge Islamic "terror." Preferring instead to use terms like rebels or militants.

Notice also how they intimate that the violence is a result of a "harsh crackdown on alleged Islamic militants."

Political changes and a harsh crackdown on alleged Islamic militants appear to have pushed the region to the verge of instability, the BBC's regional analyst Steven Eke says.

In the future, notice how they treat Israel. They're not nearly so "objective."

Crosses on Federal Property

Does the ACLU wish to remove these crosses from Federal Property?

Hurrricane Hugo

Hugo Chavez; Is this guy for real? The BBC reports (see here) that he has threatened to nationalise idle farms and help the "firms workers set up coops. He said the move was needed to fight poverty and end Venezuela's dependence on "the perverse model of capitalism". He also threatened similar action against manufacturing and industrial firms.

But according to the BBC, Mr. Chavez is also at odds with the Church,

Earlier on Sunday, Venezuela's most senior Roman Catholic Cardinal, Rosalio Castillo, accused the president of acquiring dictatorial powers.
But in his broadcast, Mr Chavez again insisted that Venezuelans have a clear choice.
"Either capitalism, which is the road to hell, or socialism, for those who want to build the kingdom of God here on Earth," he said.

In another article, (see here) the BBC reports:
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has said he is about to expel a US missionary group, New Tribes Mission.
The leftist leader said the missionaries were "imperialists" and he felt "ashamed" at their presence in indigenous areas of Venezuela.

Ralph Nagin to coordinate Pakistani relief efforts

With help and support pouring in from all over the world for the Pakistan earthquake relief efforts, perhaps no country is making a greater contribution than the U.S. Washington sources say that New Orleans mayor Ralph Nagin has been asked to cease and desist all of his efforts in the New Orleans recovery. Washington officials, with strong support from Louisiana officials and citizens, believe Mayor Nagin's abilities and vast know how in relief efforts would be better utilized in helping the Pakistanis recover from their great tragedy. Said one New Orleans local when told of the news, "my whole neighborhood will be there to make sure he gets on that plane." Benefits from Mayor Nagin's expertise are already being felt, said Mayor Nagin, "I have seen satellite images of the devastated Pakistani areas and I noticed hundreds of camels, riderless, ready to rescue distressed people from their homes, yet there were no Pakistani government camel riders to lead the would-be refugee caravans away from the disaster zone." Pledged Mayor Nagin, "I will get to the bottom of this!"

UN...keeps hope alive

excerpted from the "Baghdad East Village Voice", a You Go Girl publication:

My name is Haseem Feminiem, I am seventeen and live in Baghdad. I fight a daily war against the imperialist American occupation. I, like my fellow Baghdaddios, don't like getting screwed by the Americans, but hey, they pay well and in US currency, yes, I am a male prostitute. As I was in deep slumber this past Saturday morning, I was awakened by the din of chatter and cheers outside my window, in streets usually filled with the doom and gloom expected of an occupied land and a suppressed people. I could not clearly hear what was going on until my head cleared from its stupor. The people were chanting...ElBaradei...ElBaradei...ElBaradei! The people were chanting the praises of a great man and a great organization, the UN. It reminded me, it reminded so many of us oppressed people, that there is hope, there will always be hope, as long as there is a UN. I do not know French, but I imagine that in the language of one of the great cultures of the world, ElBaradei must mean "a better day".
(editor's note - elbaradei in ancient Cyrillic roughly translates to "the bathroom")

Natural Disasters everywhere

Poor Salvador: On October 1, the Ilamatepec volcano, located about 40 miles west of the nation’s capital, San Salvador (Santa Ana), spewed hot lava rock, volcanic ash, and toxic gases, hot mud flows and a plume reaching 40,000 feet. On the same day, they got hit with Hurricane Stan.

Earthquakes are happening everywhere. Sinse the beginning of October, there have been dozens and dozens of earth quakes all over the world. But the good news is that so far this year we have had only 10 quakes of magnitude 7.0 - 7.9 (the yearly average is 17.) The average for mag 8 is one per year!

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.html

It was only last December, that Magnitude 9.0 - Sumatra-Andaman Islands quake and tsunami killed 283,100. This was the fourth largest quake in the world since 1900. The strongest (9.5) struck Chile in 1960 killing about 2,200 in Chile, Hawaii, the Phillipines and Japan and also causing damage along the west coast of the United States.

Just so you know...

Houston based Citgo (Gas) is owned by PDV America, Inc., an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A., the national oil company of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
That's Venezuela, home of Hugo Chavez. The current President who is very busy kissing up to Castro and nationalising (or threatening to) one company after another.

Can't we just go into ANWR already?

This monster was 13 feet 1 inch

June or July 2005
Joe Goff, a Florida Parks and Wildlife game warden walks past a 13-foot, 1-inch alligator that he shot and killed near the home of Anita and Charlie Rogers. The Rogers, who live between Orlando and Titusville, could hear the bellowing in the night but had dismissed neighbors warnings about a giant alligator in the waterway behind their house. "I didn't believe it," Charlie Rogers said.

More Hamas Propaganda

From an interview with the latest leader of Hamas:

"...accusing Bush of "shooting innocent populations with missiles" in Iraq and Afghanistan, and starting a confrontation "between the West and 1.3 billion Muslims in the world."

"[That our operations caused Israel to withdraw from Gaza] is the truth and the reality and we lived this reality during the last few weeks," al-Zahar told WND. "The withdrawal happened after years of political and diplomatic activity that achieved nothing. ...The resistance caused Israel heavy damages, including on Israeli soldiers .

Same old garbage; Bush (not Bin Laden) started the war. Hamas claimed they drove Israel out of Lebanon too. Lying, terrorist thugs.

You Have Been Warned

"For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows." (Matthew 24:7-8)

global tragedies, can we help?

As I reflect upon the tragedy that has hit so close to home in New Orleans, I am now confronted with what appears to be an even larger tragedy, by epic proportions, caused by the Asian earthquake that has killed tens of thousands. What could have been done to prevent such human suffering, what did we do wrong? We must always ask this question as it is perhaps the essential question of measuring our humanity. I believe the United States, as the greatest nation on our planet, has an obligation to prevent tragedy wherever it may occur globally. Perhaps if the Bush (Scrooge?) administration were not so miserly in doling out foreign aid, Third World nations could invest more in their infrastructures to prevent such tragedies as the Asian earthquake from causing such devastating effects. I for one would consider it a minor burden to have my taxes increased such that the great United States could be more generous in its foreign aid for we are so blessed to live in such a great country where we all live so luxuriously.

Online Games Addictive? How about Blogging?

Koreans are dying to play online games. How obsessed are they? Do you know anyone who appears to be hooked? Do we need government warnings? Is blogging addictive?

If a blog falls in the wilderness does anyone read it? (Nod to whatifif)

I'm so lucky

President Bush's Best Speech yet

This week President Bush gave possibly his best speech yet articulating the need for the continued war on Islamo-fascism.

"...Some call this evil Islamic radicalism; others, militant Jihadism; still others, Islamo-fascism. Whatever it's called, this ideology is very different from the religion of Islam. This form of radicalism exploits Islam to serve a violent, political vision: the establishment, by terrorism and subversion and insurgency, of a totalitarian empire that denies all political and religious freedom. These extremists distort the idea of jihad into a call for terrorist murder against Christians and Jews and Hindus -- and also against Muslims from other traditions, who they regard as heretics. "

There, he said it "Islamic radicalism...Jihadism...Islamo-fascism."

To those calling for us to get out of Iraq he said, "Their tactic to meet this goal has been consistent for a quarter-century: They hit us, and expect us to run. They want us to repeat the sad history of Beirut in 1983, and Mogadishu in 1993 -- only this time on a larger scale, with greater consequences. " So we're not going to.

"There's always a temptation, in the middle of a long struggle, to seek the quiet life, to escape the duties and problems of the world, and to hope the enemy grows weary of fanaticism and tired of murder. This would be a pleasant world, but it's not the world we live in. The enemy is never tired, never sated, never content with yesterday's brutality. This enemy considers every retreat of the civilized world as an invitation to greater violence. In Iraq, there is no peace without victory. We will keep our nerve and we will win that victory."

Next time you see a leftist demonstration against the war or hear nonsense about Bush being a danger to this country remember these truths.

"Like the ideology of communism, our new enemy pursues totalitarian aims. Its leaders pretend to be an aggrieved party, representing the powerless against imperial enemies. In truth they have endless ambitions of imperial domination, and they wish to make everyone powerless except themselves. Under their rule, they have banned books, and desecrated historical monuments, and brutalized women. They seek to end dissent in every form, and to control every aspect of life, and to rule the soul, itself. While promising a future of justice and holiness, the terrorists are preparing for a future of oppression and misery. "

It was an excellent speech. Read the whole speech here.

Moral poverty cost blacks in New Orleans

Say a hurricane is about to destroy the city you live in. Two questions: What would you do? What would you do if you were black?

Read Moral Poverty..Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson

Never miss Victor Davis Hanson on Friday

It's Friday and no Friday is complete without reading Victor Davis Hanson at National Review Online.

I wish that he had elaborated on this intriging statement.

The shortcoming was never the number of U.S troops per se, but our self-imposed straightjacket on rules of engagement that apparently discouraged the vital sorts of offensive operations that we have at last seen the last two months.

Europe is Dying

Europe Learns the Wrong Lessons
By Karl Zinsmeister

...Europeans simply refuse to consider any dramatic alteration of their ingrained welfare-state habits. A new poll released ...finds that six out of ten Germans currently describe socialism as “a goodidea that so far has been implemented badly.”

...Beyond economics and politics, there are now even deeper divergences which separate Europe...the collapse of the European birthrate (which will leave a majority of residents in many cities with no siblings, cousins, aunts or uncles) ... “Europe is dying... a disease in the realm of the human spirit. the suicide clinic in Switzerland...German laws that legalized prostitution two years ago, theoretically exposing laid-off waitresses and secretaries to the risk of having to entertain job offers from the sex industry or face the loss of unemployment benefits...31 percent of pediatricians in the Netherlands have euthanized an infant, and that a fifth of these took place without the knowledge orconsent of parents.

One of victims - "We were exposed"

Read the sordid details here, here and here.

Alabama 31, Florida 3 - After the beating

The Honorable Bob Riley
Birmingham, Alabama

Dear Governor Riley:

I write today on behalf of many of my fellow citizens who are unable to do so for themselves as a result of physical and mental injuries sustained in a vicious attack while on an October 1, 2005 field trip to Tuscaloosa. During this visit, a group of University of Florida students were suddenly and unexpectantly set upon by Alabama hooligans and for sixty minutes were mercilessly beaten while their friends and family watched in impotent horror.

It is on their behalf that I register our protests of the barbarity of the attack in which the Florida students were repeatedly beaten, manhandled, gang tackled, and mauled. While they tried to defend themselves they were ultimately and brutishly overpowered. Needless to say the mental anguish suffered by their friends and family having been forced to watch this outrageous atrocity is undoubtedly enormous and may in some cases require long recoveries.

It is on the behalf of these victims that I demand you take immediate steps to identify the perpetrators of this outrage and ensure that they receive their just rewards.

Thank You,

A Concerned Floridian

What happened to the Gators?

They were mugged in Alabama. Alabama's opening drive of the third quarter was a Florida fan's worst nightmare. Already down big going into the half, Florida's defense was slapped around like a bad ho being worked over by her irate pimp.

The statistics don't look so bad as Florida's offense produced everything but points. But the defense was exposed; even a visibly shaken Urban Meyer admitted it. Also exposed were the college polls because for a number 5 team to get manhandled by a 15th ranked team shows the lunacy of the current system.

Final score Alabama 31, Florida 3. Welcome to the ranks of the overrated.

Evolution - "Where's the meat?"

Article in BBC Whale riders reveal evolution

I know that I am not the "sharpest knife in the drawer" but I wonder if the journalists reporting these "proof of evolution" stories are in my IQ range or lower. Are they unable to communicate the import of the scientific findings. Or is the whole thing a crock? Is there a lot of speculation surrounding a little evidence.
Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm too thick to make the obvious connection and see the wonderful piece of the puzzle that has been found. Admittedly, I haven't spent hours and hours pursuing this stuff but I'm sorry, so far, the evidence is, to put it charitibly, "weak."
