A Kinder Gentler Army

What would Gomer Pyle or Forrest Gump think of the new, kinder and gentler Drill Sergeant? Its definitely a changing world.

Yesterday, I heard a caller to the Hannity Radio Show; It was a young Marine deploying in January or February to Camp Falluja, Iraq. I swear, from the sound of that girls sweet little voice you would have thought she was 12 or 13 years old.

May God bless her and keep her safe and return her unharmed to her family.

Bless her - I hope she stays safe.

The military went soft years ago. Now, you can't even curse or get into a decent fist-fight.

GOD save our troops from thier "PC masters".

I have advised my son to stay away from the military.

Tiger, I am with you, besides myself I had three brothers in the military, five cousins, two KIA, my father , four uncles and two great uncles. My advice would be to take a pass.

The idea of compulsory service verses volunteer service is an interesting one, Lady. I was in the Army at the time the change occurred.

In our Founding Fathers time, a "professional standing, hired Army" was considered to be bad. Remember the Hessians?

I think it all boils down to the state of the society. If the average volunteer is educated enough and understands history and realizes that his/her masters can sometimes be the bad guys, then an all-volunteer force is good.

... I'm not convinced that's the case right now; therefore a standing Army might become another insidious tool of bad leaders. You know, like Public Education!

I like the Israeli model, 2 years service minimum, for man and woman, for all citizens. I would not include non-citizens. "Service" should be a priviledge of citizenry and requirement before voting.
