How do you know they aren't monitoring what you are writing, what you are reading, what, you buy? And maybe not even for malicious purposes but to sell to corporate America so they can better market you. If a Judge isn't involved it goes against our system of checks and balances. You can thank the liberal for returning your privacy rights to the Library.
"They" have had the ability for quite some time to monitor your cell phone calls, your web postings, etc. There have been privacy issues regarding credit card use and the modern computerized inventory and checkout systems. Your purchasing habits can be monitored for marketing purposes. That is the price we pay for the microchip and being a part of the information society. There are genuine privacy concerns but this issue of monitoring incoming and outgoing international phone calls of suspected terrorist is far and beyond the privacy concerns for the everyday Joe Public. I think the essential problem is that some people think W. is Bushhitler while others like me think he would be irresponsible if he weren't vigilant.
No one says that tapping terrorist’s phone calls is bad. Of course they should be able to but they shouldn’t be able to do it to US citizens without Judges permission.
We don't know all the facts involved in this issue yet. I believe that where time permits, the usual judicial process is absolutely proper. But in the post 9/11 world if a suspicious international call were detected would be negligent to wait for a Judge's order. If some innocent American citizen's privacy was intruded upon, I am sorry. If that American citizen was found plotting against this country, I have no regret. There's something to be said for "keeping your nose clean." As far as the library privacy, it's my understanding that your library records were available by court order before the Patriot Act.

Yesterday: BUSH LIED AND LED US TO WAR ON FAULTY INTELLIGENCE! THAT'S WRONG!
Today: BUSH TRIED TO GATHER MORE RELIABLE INTELLIGENCE BY MONITORING INTERNATIONAL PHONE CALLS MADE BY SUSPECTS! THAT'S WRONG!
Tomorrow: BUSH DIDN'T STOP THE MOST RECENT TERROR ATTACK BECAUSE HE DIDN'T HAVE GOOD INTELLIGENCE! THAT'S WRONG!
Of course, the only "wrong" thing about these statements is the logic behind them.
