Montreal Climate Summit - Day Three

The big news headline from the AP on day three:

"China Urges US to join Kyoto Treaty" by Beth Duff-Brown

MONTREAL - China _ one of the world's major polluters _ urged the U.S. to join the Kyoto treaty Wednesday, rejecting argum
ents that the pact is flawed because it fails to restrict emissions by developing countries.

China says "we're already cutting our emissions and it's unfair to ask our poor people to cut back on energy use. But we think it is a pity that the World's biggest polluter (US) isn't being nice." One can hardly blame the Chinese for playing politics. Afterall, the US points to China and India as having received exemptions to the treaty even though China admits to being the worlds second largest polluter.

This AP writer focuses on the anti-American politics of the summit but we are told this:

The Kyoto agreement targets carbon dioxide and five other heat-trapping gases blamed for rising global temperatures and disrupted weather patterns. It calls on the top 35 industrialized nations to cut emissions to 5.2 percent below their 1990 levels between 2008 and 2012.

On Wednesday, the conference finalized the treaty's so-called "rule book," establishing greenhouse emissions cuts and mechanisms to allow developed countries to earn credit for carbon reduction by investing in development projects in other nations.

This is why they need the US to join; so that we can subsidize the development of the world. It's a big wealth redistribution scheme which the US Senate voted 99-0 against when Bill Clinton was President.

"The Bush administration claims Kyoto would cost the US $400 billion and 5 million jobs."

The BBC also likes the anti-Bush angle and interviewed a Greenpeace representative who said that 'the US would not join Kyoto until after the 2008 election.' This statement ignores the fact that the US Senate must ratify Treaties.

Look for the World to continue to try to shame and bully the US into signing on to this bloodsucker. Hope and pray that no matter who is the President is or which party controls the Senate, the US does not commit economic suicide.
